friday night is sacred

before i shut it down for the weekend and go about doing whatever it is that i do, here's a little something extra for ya...

first of all, head over to sixeyes and download the excellent track by the spectacular fantastic - also go get king of france - white confection - it's outstanding. sixeyes is a great blog and he posts a million billion songs. kind of a quantity IS quallity approach. good shit.

now as much as i like talking about people who do what i do better than me, i have an ego too, so here some stuff from my own library - the much adored and underlistened to rock*a*teens. do NOT confuse them with the doowop outfit rock-a-teens. that would be bad. when you unwrap that CD and load it into iTunes you WILL be upset. you will put down your rice and beans and have no appetite at all for a good hour and a half. just ... trust me on that one.

rock*a*teens - pretty thoughts strike down the band (from sweet bird of youth)
rock*a*teens - black metal scars (from golden time)

relax, don't think about the way i treat you

Ambulance LTD - Primitive

Nice little track here from NYC's ambulance LTD.
the LP released recently doesn't all sound like lou reed,
which to me is kind of a let down. but feel free to disagree.

solid album though.

a sad farewell

i looked at the calendar today and was shocked near death to find there IS no 31st of Movember! the greatest month of all has come and gone once again. don't panic - i have not evicted the fantastic captain morgan from my lip just yet. i can't shave until the "kick-ass mustache bash" serves as proper effigy to this years creation. in the meantime, i'd like to share with you the Movember Mix EP i put together for the awards ceremony here ay my work.

  1. Vandals - Power Mustache
  2. Sparks - Moustache
  3. The Mopeds - Little Ugly Moustaches
  4. Frank Black - Fu Manchu
  5. Nirvana - Mr. Moustached
  6. Fakes - No More Scary Moustache Men
  7. Atom And His Package - Mustache T.V.

Sparks track has some awesome lines in it and i was reminded the other day that it was featured in the soundtrack to "Valley Girl". i would venture to say that pretty much any song about the Mo is destined to have some awesome lyrics...

jens lekman has something on his mind

Jens Lekman - Black Cab
Left Banke - I've Got Something On My Mind

so jens recently put out a record that got some good press. i missed his show at spaceland, but while i like some of his material, it seems to be pretty hit and miss miss miss. the good stuff is very good, but the rest is marginal to just poor.

i was giving the new record a quick spin, not really caring much for it, when i hit this track "black cab" - track 5 - which is a great little tune about being a little adrift and just ... being lost. really nice, simple tune, good lyric. i can't really get over the sourcing on that harpsichord intro that tracks through the whole song - it's straight from the left banke's "something on my mind".

oh no goddamn
i missed the last tram
i killed the party again
goddman, goddamn

i wanna sleep in my bed
i wanna clean out my head
don't wanna look this dead
don't wanna feel this dread

i killed the party again
ruined for my friends
"oh your so siilent, jens"
oh maybe i am
maybe i am

now at the central station
no time for being patient
i feel like going home
but at the same time i don't

and also - the wedding present

Dust off your mister fusion for this one...

Sat, Feb 25 @ The Troubadour - The Wedding Present

that's so far away, i'm not even going to say anything about it yet.

Also recently announced... EODM

Dec 21 @ The Troubadour - Eagles Of Death Metal
when jesse "the devil" introduces the band, he likes to point out "and i'm jesse 'the devil' on mustache and guitar!"

EODM got some pretty bad word or mouth after their set at the recent katrina benefit show at the wiltern, but don't pay that any heed. oil up your chaps and shimmy down to the troubadour for this show. granted it IS movember, but i don't think i'll be hanging on to my sweet 'stache long enough to wear it to this show. i will, however, bring fakies for anyone willing to put a little spirit gum on their lip. what says "i love your band" more than phony facial hair?

The Rapture Descend

you all know the rapture. they fucking rule. they decided they wanted to come to LA and play two TINY club shows, which were recently announced. I had kind of just assumed that both shows were already sold out, so i hadn' bit on tickets until about ten minutes ago (if you're watching the clock - i made my purchase at about 4:15pm Sunday Nov 27). If you want to try your luck, stop by www.viperroom.musictoday.com - i don't think a lot of people know that you can buy advance tickets for the viper room, so this one is flying a little under the radar. to be honest, i would rather see them at the troubadour. but if push came to shove (and it always does) i'd see them play in an unlit sewer.

Dec 7 @ The Troubadour (i wish i could have gotten tickets to this one)
Dec 8 @ The Viper Room (i am so fucking glad i was able to score tickets to this show)

that number again is 1-800-www.viperroom.musictoday.com
