The Arm @ Cinespace

April 18 @ Cinespace
The Arm - Priveledged Few (download from the bands site here)

Austin rock rock rock band The Arm plays Cinespace (w. Single Frame) in a couple weeks to pimp the release of their new album Call You Out and i suggest-gest-gest you go go go. the new material is sounding strong and i just get the idea that this band needs to be seen live to be heard.

it's hard to call them lyrics when you're talking about the arm - they're more like conceptual mantras delivered to music. in particular, songs like song automatic 1 2 3. sort of like an indie art house version of amie mann - who's writing style is to twist together cliches until she has combined them into something new - so to the arm deal in verbal concept cluster bombs.

news of the rapture

The Rapture - Olio off the 7" Vinyl Mirror from ... ~ 1999(?)

CMJ today ran a blurb regarding the final stages of production on the 3rd LP from The Rapture. The band has been working on the record from some time in the new york area with Futureheads collabo Paul Epworth and Chemical Brothers producer Ewan Pearson (this from NME clipping - not sure which issue). on a side note, Pearson has put out a couple electronica records of his own back to the rapture ... final production work is taking place right here in LA with the guy who took automators job from the gorillaz. you know .... what's his name... dangermouse.

From CMJ:
vocalist Luke Jenners told Rolling Stone, "[Danger Mouse] just treats us like samples. Instead of me going in and playing a guitar part, he'll take a little loop of it and use it to sound like something's exploding. It doesn't even sound like a guitar after he's done with it sometimes. That's new for us."
[snip]
the band half-seriously has suggested Taco Party [as an album title] ]in honor of their love for the delicious Mexican dish.

yes, that was me reffing CMJ siting rolling stone quoting luke jenners. all so i could post a rip of old vinyl from the

the album is currently expected sometime this summer.

mood music

Pinebender - There's A Bag Of Weights In The Back Of My Car (note: 12min 30sec - 14mb)
Pinebender - New balance

with this storm over our heads for a few days now, the temper of it has started to set in. the mood of it has become habitual. today seemed like the right day to finally get around to posting some tracks from pinebender's Things Are About To Get Weird (2000 - Ohio Gold Records).

pinebender is out of chicago. i hear similarities to so many bands i used to love - in any given song you'll heard the lineage of grunge and post-rock influences like dinosaur jr, built to spill, 764-hero and Archers of Loaf, sunny day, screaming trees... even a little athens-rock like the glands as well... all weaved into a semi-experimental three piece.

the album is remarkably even - nearly every song on it is a rewarding listen. posted above are tracks 1 and 3 respectively off the 2000 record.

around the horn

bishop allen's 3rd installment of their 12-EPs-In-12-Months project has arrived.

The freebie off March is the smooth running The Monitor

i like analog clap tracks because they remind me of the process of recording. that there are these people standing around a microphone. in a room. concentrating on slapping their hands together in just the right approximation of unison. this is not clapping in that ray charles heat-of-the-moment kind of way. it's a 17 year old kid taking the SAT's kind of way.
