Bishop Allen ... And Not A Moment Too Soon

Bishop Allen - Corazon
by the school on the street
you were dropped off with a sign "this piano is free"
it didn't look free to me

Bishop Allen is back with the first of their new EPs, January - 4 songs tracking in around 20 minutes and available for just $5 flat via the bands website. one of the major selling points of the new EP is the addition of a piano to the mix, which they wrote into a song that you just downloaded.

while we wait on the followup to charm school, allegedly titled Clementines and allegedly complete except for a production and distribution deal, the pups of bishop allen have cooked up a crazy plan to release an EP every month until the album comes out. a couple lo-fi mp3's were posted over at you aint no picasso, but the official site has been kind enough to release a higher fidelity track.

the details as posted on the band official fan board (on jan 25):
The first EP is done. It will be for sale Jan 31st on the website, and soon after on iTunes. The songs are:

1. Corazon
2. The Bullet and Big D
3. The Rabbit
4. Making Friends

We started work on the February EP today. That one will be ready February 28th.

These are all new songs. Nothing from Clementines. We played two of the January EP songs at the Bowery Ballroom, but other than that, they haven't lived out in the world anywhere. Except for Making Friends, which is different now than when we played it a few times long ago.

it's a little late in the day, so i'm going to just grab something i wrote about them back in july ... Bishop Allen is a band that seems to have come together strictly to reinvent several of life's coming-of-age moments - the first job, graduation, the first lost love - and cast them in a different light. it sounds something like a School House Rock for early adulthood. Where even the saddest defeats are voiced in the sweetest of melancholy - with none of the resignation that comes later in life.

this song sounds like the band has started to face the challenge of writing about the challenges that face us later in life.

who are the grammys?

nothing could be more meaningless than the grammy awards - for fuck sake, jamie foxx is a nominee. jamie foxx is the ashley simson of R&B. so with that in mind, here's some things that are actually WORTH watching, courtesy of youtube.com

youtube is one of the best sites for video clips. how best is it? how about Kinks best. is that best enough for you? how about watching the 1966 video for "Sunny Afternoon"? or Waterloo Sunset? dave davies looks like a fucking member of mars volta in that one... if you actually want to see a live-live video instead of all the crappy tape performances, check out the bands 93 performance of Till The End Of The Day for a BBC session.

this band in particular i have very little visual memory of. we're all used to seeing a million posters and magazine covers and concert footage and press pics of the beatles, the stones, zep, iggy, bowie, the who, marc bolan, or even rod stewart and the faces ... but the kinks - i don't really have much memory of the kinks other than the music itself.

in the end all i could think was how much Ray Davies looks like Richard Kind. because i'm shallow like that.

764-Hero's John Atkins New Project

The Can't See - Bar Fight
764-Hero - Comb The Carpet

So i just noticed this headline on pitchfork on my second or third visit today with details of John Atkins new band The Can't See. John Atkins is that guy what sang in 764-Hero. 764-Hero was a band that evolved into a great act over time. the bands final record - 2002's Nobody Knows This Is Everywhere - is a classic. right up there with vee vee, long drive for someone with nothign to thing about, and there's nothing wrong with love.

You can find two more tracks from The Can't See on the bands website.

Bob Weisman Announces LA Show

8pm, Friday March 10th @ Echo Park Film Center

Yes, he WAS born to love you and he's coming down here to prove it and no i didn't know echo park had a film center. Canada's own will be in Los Angeles screening his short films and presumably playing the music that accompanies said films. He also better have a sixer of lebat blue and a safe haven for draft dodgers on his person.

check out Bob TV over at bobwiseman.ca to watch some of the videos. should be a very entertaining night.

Leah Abramson opens the show with her spare self-described "folk-noir" with a tone not entirely unlike emmy lou harris. Which is a high compliment for music i'm not really prepared to endorse. if you want to download tracks from leah abramson, visit leahabramson.com

Voxtrot LA Dates

Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives

March 12 @ The Echo
March 12 @ UCAL Cooperage

BONUS: both dates are with the pretty cool Kiss Me Deadly
(download Dance 4)

I think about a week ago or something, Voxtrot announced a few months worth of tour dates. I only just noticed this fact because i went to their site to download their latest mp3 offering. In what i can only assume is an effort to sustain some of the buzz following the circulation of their track The Start Of Something, they've made Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives available for download on their website. at first listen, the hook isn't as deep as Start Of Something but it's remains a decent song. the knock on this track is that, to me at least, it sounds like about 600 other indie rock songs. i feel like there's one song in particular that i'm thinking of that i can't put my finger on... if you can, email me to put my mind at ease. that's not to say the song isn't good, it's just not the most unusual or original track.
